My first exposure to online books was in college. Even though we always had the choice to buy text-books in the store, many of the professors put their books on-line as well. Doing this would save the students money and allow them to access the books from any PC in the college. This meant that you never had to carry around your textbooks - a major benefit after a semester of slogging through the snow.

At first, I was not very into books online. I couldn't get into it, you see. It just did not feel right to me. I like to be able to relax with a publication, holding it in my hand and turning the pages. I could tell where things were spatially and recall the pages by their location. With the publication online, you can't do any of these things. It stresses your eyes, requires you to sit upright in the same position for hour after hour, and is extremely hard to flip your way all the way through. I also like audio books on CD, though.

After a few years of online book reading, however, I was much more acclimated to the strategy, just like I had gotten used to audio books. I had already begun to buy books on-line for almost every reason. I bought sports books online, textbooks on-line - you name it. Not only did the internet allow me to buy printed books inexpensively, but it also let me access many things that were out of print.

Reading publications on line is not really that good for contemporary literature which you can buy inside the store. You may as well either buy it or take it out of the library, or hear it, with books on cd. The great thing about books online, however, is that you can often find quite old ones with only a little trouble. Resources such as Project Gutenberg allow you to access the great classics of writing from all times and places around the world. As long as it's no longer copy protected, you can legally put the publication on-line.

Of course, the area where books online have the best advantage of all is with audio books. The great thing about audio books on-line is that it is so much more convenient than having to take them out of the library or turn to an audio book store. Instead, you can simply download them to your PC and listen to them at your convenience. If you want to take them with you, you can put them on an mp3 player or burn them onto CD. Audio books on-line make total sense.
